As a new mother, you are not told how difficult it is going to be for the first six weeks. Everyone tells you how wonderful it will be, that you won’t get much sleep in the beginning, and that it will be very difficult, but no one says to you that the first six weeks will be horrible, and then all of a sudden it will get easier.

You need items that you have never even used before, and if you know anybody who has ever raised, carried, or even seen a child before, they have an opinion for you about how you should raise yours. You read an insane amount of articles before the birth about other people’s birth experiences, your own fears multiply incrementally, and you start to wonder what in the world you were thinking, wanting to have a baby.

When you start focusing on what you need for the baby, you go to a number of stores, read more articles, and test out merchandise. It’s interesting that people tell you to test out merchandise before you have the baby. You do not know what it’s going to be like to have a baby, you are relying on salespeople and other articles to find out what you might “need” and yet, you are testing items.

The people who help you in the stores are often individuals who have never had children, either, so that is not especially helpful. They may carry the merchandise in these stores, but they are not always the best price, and they are not always the only items that are out there, just the ones that this particular well-known chain store chooses to carry.

So where else can you go? You are always sure to find an endless amount of stores on the internet, but calling them to find out information is not always feasible. Many of them do not have 800 numbers, or a toll-free solution to reach them.

Out of all the items you need for a baby, probably the most tested and yet most controversial item is a stroller. There are several manufacturers, every manufacturer produces at least five or so strollers, and you need to select at least one for your baby and family needs. Do you need a travel system, which holds both a car seat and a stroller, what are the weight limits, do you have more than one child who will need to sit or stand on the stroller, how long has this stroller been produced, has it been recalled, and so on.

One of the best answers is to consult a toll free directory. You can call different locations again and again, not only to ask them the questions you want to, questions that will come up after testing the strollers, and after hearing other questions pop into your head talking with other parents about their stroller, but also to compare prices. You would be surprised to find that the stroller price itself may not vary substantially from retailer to retailer, but for the effort, and using an 800 number, you could easily save yourself a significant amount of money in shipping costs.

Even your local well-known chain store charges significant costs to ship items to you, and if you compare prices, you are sure to find that the shipping costs are worked into the in-store cost. Using an on-line retailer, even with photos, does not tell you much of the information you will find relevant for your purposes, including what do others say about this product, have there been many returns, and if so, what do they purchase instead?

Make sure you get all your questions answered by the retailer you find on your 800 number directory. You can call as many times as you want, and you may also save a significant amount of money. At least enough to buy one more month’s worth of diapers.

It has begun. The first wave of Baby-Boomers have begun to retire. If you listen carefully, you can hear owners of golf courses cheering. It may be good times for the golf industry right now, but what about 25-35 years down the road. How fast and far can they expand in the Baby-Boomer rush and what will happen when this large cohort begins to die. There are simply not enough people to fill the void and this could trigger a crash to a significant portion of the golf industry.

Perhaps the only thing Baby-Boomers appreciate more than golf is their health. If we redirect our focus and look at the impact Baby-Boomers will have on the health care system, it begs us to ask similar questions. How fast can medical care expand and following the “rush”, can we prevent a collapse?

Since the mid-90’s in the US, medical facilities have experienced a nurse shortage. Naturally, as the population ages and the Baby-Boomers require more care there will be further stress on the health care system and this shortage is expected to increase. Unfortunately, there are no shortages of shortages in the health care system and the additional demand of the Baby-Boomers on the already fragile system could trigger a collapse in the not so distant future.

Perhaps the most apparent example of Baby-Boomer health care stress can be seen in today’s hip replacement procedures. The number of patients requiring this surgery far outnumbers the number of qualified surgeons able to perform the procedure. The system is so overwhelmed that many people are forced to go abroad for hip replacements as well as other procedures. But the reason for the increase stress on the system is two-fold. As mentioned before, the shear volume of Baby-Boomers is a definite factor but secondly, the Baby-Boomer cohort is very health conscious and they are happily continuing the trend of increased life span.

It will be interesting to see how the health care system adapts to accommodate the Baby-Boomers. Since their numbers are transient it is likely so too will be the government policies. However, it is evident that changes in the health care system happen very slowly, if at all. With the typical time frame for training a doctor hovering around 8 years, the only thing that changes slower than policy is the number of health care professionals in the system.

It is a good thing the retiring Baby-Boomers are more health conscious because they will have more active in their health care than their parents. With health care professionals struggling to keep up to the number of Baby-Boomers, methods of home health care will have to be embraced.

The golf and health care industry will likely see increased demand in the up coming years. However, the golf industry will likely better accommodate the increasing volume of Baby-Boomer patrons because its malleable infrastructure. It is wise for Baby-boomers to have begun to flock to the golf course. After all, shortly this could perhaps be the only way for a patient to see a doctor.

A baby’s skin is very thin and extremely sensitive. This is why babies tend to have a lot more skin issues than adults do. In fact, dry skin and rashes in babies are a fact of life. It is, therefore, up to you as the parent to keep your baby comfortable and do all that you can do to protect his skin.

The thinness of your baby’s skin not only makes it easy for tears and scratches to occur, it also does nothing to hold in moisture which makes it easier for dry skin to occur. In a healthy adult, skin is kept moist by both the thickness of the skin and the presence of sebum. Sebum is an oily substance that is produced by hair follicles all over the body. This substance coats the skin blocking out the elements while holding vital moisture deep in the tissue.

Your baby has yet to develop all of these protective measures that help prevent dry skin. That means that you need to be extra careful and diligent when it comes to taking care of your baby’s skin.

Here’s how:

7 Ways to Prevent Dry Skin on Your Baby

Water temperature

Hot water can contribute to dry skin. Make sure that your baby’s bath water is lukewarm or tepid. A baby’s sensitive skin cannot withstand that much heat so the proper water temperature will feel a little cooler than what you think it should.

Lotion

Always use lotion on your baby. Apply lotion after every bath and during every outfit change. You may also want to apply lotion throughout the day if you think that dry skin is developing.

Vaseline

Babies are prone to rash and dry skin. Make sure that your baby’s skin is protected against anything that it may come into contact with, such as urine, by forming a barrier with Vaseline. Vaseline will help hole moisture in while at the same time prevent things that could break down the skin from coming into contact with it. Vaseline should only be used for isolated sections of skin that are extremely dry or may become dry.

Elements

Protect your baby’s skin from the elements by wrapping him up in the winter and shielding him from the sun in the summer.

Clothing

Certain clothing may irritate your baby’s skin and cause dry skin. Stay away from clothing materials that may be rough and harsh for your baby’s skin.

Laundry detergent

Your baby’s skin requires a different detergent than you use. Be sure to use a gentle detergent especially made for baby clothing.

Bath time

Dry skin has many causes including body washes and shampoos. Make sure that the bath products that you use on your baby do not cause him any irritation. Never use products that you would use on yourself on your baby.

5 Ways to Treat Dry Skin on Your Baby

Lotion

If you notice that your baby is developing dry skin, increase the amount of times that you put lotion on him throughout the day. In many cases, this in itself is enough to restore health and moisture to the affected skin.

Over the counter treatments

Sometimes you will need to buy something a little stronger than lotion to counter your baby’s dry skin condition. Be sure to consult with your doctor to see what he recommends.

Increase fluids

If your baby is older than six months of age and is experiencing dry skin, you can increase the amount of fluids that he is drinking. This will help restore moisture to the skin.

Prescription creams

In extreme cases of dry skin, you may need to obtain a prescription from your doctor to treat your baby’s skin. If this occurs, be sure to follow all of your doctor’s instructions for treating the affected skin.

Be gentle

Always be very gentle with dry skin. Pat your baby dry after bath time instead of rubbing him. Take care not to snag the skin with any rough fabrics or fingernails. Expect that your baby will feel some discomfort and itchiness in the affected area and take care to address his needs. Dress him in loose clothing and apply Vaseline to areas that are easily chaffed.

Remember, if your baby’s skin condition does not improve or gets worse, contact his doctor. What appears to be dry skin may be something else altogether that requires a different type of treatment.

The transition to motherhood is a profound step in a woman’s life. One day she is “just a woman”, and then literally overnight, whether she gives birth or adopts, she becomes someone’s mother. She enters this new territory with a concept of what “mother” means based on her own childhood, perceived expectations from others, and the media. For nine months, the pregnant woman gets to “play” with the idea of what it will be like when the baby comes. She imagines how she will be as a mother, maybe idealizing herself a bit. She swears that she won’t make the mistakes she sees others making.

Then comes the initiation – the birth. Adoptive mothers also experience a moment of truth when the baby is in her arms and she is now a “mother”.

Suddenly, the marriage changes as well. There is this other person, the father or partner going through his own internal identity crisis. Both living under the same roof, sometimes having conflicting ideas of what should be done from minute to minute. During the baby’s first night home, reality strikes. Just as our new mother is drifting off to sleep, still exhausted and recuperating from the birth, the baby cries. “Do I really have to get up now?” the new mom wonders.

The ups and downs

Of course, having a baby is a time of joy and celebration. But there is also some loss involved. The new mom has lost her old self and she might lack confidence in her new role. The word “freedom” takes on new meaning and is longed for. Unless she has someone to watch her new bundle while she goes out, she finds she can’t just step out the door like she used to. There is no such thing as “I’ll be right back, just going to the corner” any more. Now, going out the door has become a big production. Pack the diaper bag, wrap up the baby . . . oh, wait, change the diaper first, now wrap up the baby. Drag the stroller down the stairs….”Is going out worth it?” She decides not. What happened to that productive woman? She could squeeze three errands into less than an hour, finish a work project, cook dinner and clean the bathroom. Now she is a little discombobulated and disorganized – not a comfortable feeling for most new moms.

While becoming a mother is instantaneous, it is really a process. The new mom is tested to her limits and beyond. Sometimes she gets it right and is overjoyed – and sometimes she completely gets it wrong (but hopefully can laugh at herself, along with the baby).

The haves and the have-nots

In the early days, she is eager to hear her child call, “Mommy!”, but after a few years she wants to run away if she hears “MOMMY” one more time! Suddenly every kid in the department store calling “mom” sounds like hers. Now, there is a new division between our new mom and her friends without kids. There’s a little tension in the air as the one without makes all sorts of great suggestions. When the mom tries to explain that there is also a down side to motherhood, the “one without” absolutely refuses to believe it. Mom might be tired, drained and a little depressed, but her childless friend will say, “You should thank your lucky stars that you’ve been blessed with such a beautiful child.” And yes, she does, every day, but sometimes she secretly hates it and wonders, “What was I thinking?”, unable to share those thoughts with anyone but another mom. Now the induction into the mom’s club begins.

To know how it feels

I recently had a conversation with my son who is learning how to drive. When he was young and sitting in the back seat, he would chatter away and I would miss most of what he said because my attention was on the crazy streets of Brooklyn, trying to keep us safe and alive. He would always complain, “You didn’t hear a thing I said,” and I would try and explain; but he would pout and refuse to repeat a word of it. Now, learning to drive, he was becoming tense and I couldn’t resist saying, “Now you see why I never heard what you were saying while I was driving”. “Well yeah, but you could have explained it to me,” he protested. My reply? “I tried, but now that you’re driving, you can really understand”. That’s how it is with friends who don’t have kids. Unless they are tackling what our new mom has to deal with, they really can’t imagine how hard it is.

What’s normal, what’s not

The transition into motherhood is sometimes a long and painstaking process, as well – especially if support is not available. No matter the expectations, the new dad is probably not up to mom’s standards. Whatever the parents thought parenthood was going to be like, the demands are usually far greater than ever imagined. It is only over time that she starts to believe she is a good mother and begins to form an identity of actually being one, for real.

It’s important to spot warning signs early, and to seek professional help before things get worse. New mothers do flock to one another but sometimes it’s hard to find like minded souls. Sometimes when she does find them, a mom’s experiences don’t feel the same as theirs and she might feel isolated in her feelings. If there is excessive tearfulness, increased fighting with your partner, or a sense of detachment from the baby, seek help. Don’t let these normal difficulties spiral out of control by not seeking supportive counseling. Sometimes couples therapy is helpful at this time, as well. Discuss your problems with a trusted friend and try to get a referral for a therapist who will be sensitive to what you’re going through. Also, making connections with other moms is important throughout the years your child is growing. Try to make those connections and retain them.

Be easy on yourself!

Finally, cut yourself some slack. Perfectionism doesn’t work with motherhood. We may have wished that our own mothers were different, but now we’re seeing that it really isn’t so easy after all. Be gentle with yourself as you learn how to be a mom – and forgive, forgive, forgive.

Your baby nursery idea will begin to take shape while you shop for a crib and other furniture. Just be prepared to be overwhelmed at first by the mind boggling choice of themes. You may be looking for a complete furnishing set, or you may be day-dreaming about designing your own custom decor. Often a simple, classic approach is more sensible than a frilly, over-the-top baby nursery idea with paraphernalia that will just get in the way when you are frazzled and exhausted. This collection covers just a few of the thousands of possibilities.

1. Magical Mother Goose Nursery Rhyme Decor

Who doesn’t love the Mother Goose characters? Adorable watercolors bring these stories to life. Your baby will grow to love the colorful creations on the wall decor. This wonderful series will coordinate well with most baby furniture and you will easily be able to find bedding and furnishings to match. Colorful Mother Goose Nursery Rhyme quilts and blankets are a treat. This is a delightful, fresh theme.

2. Original With Other Lovable Characters

We all fall in love with certain lovable story book characters, such as Peter Rabbit or Snoopy. Winnie the Pooh is a favorite of almost any baby, and the bedding and furnishings are available to create a classic Pooh crib. Find Snoopy curled up under a friendly moon and starts. Or opt for a variety of Disney characters, such as Mickey Mouse. Furnishings with rhymes always lead to hilarity and enjoyment and can be a fun baby nursery idea.

3. Charm Your Kid With Cute Creatures

When it comes to babies, it is a given that they love cuddly animals. A vast variety of creature comforters are on offer. From farm animals to frog decor abound. For adventurous kids there is dinosaur bedding. Little girls love lady bug or butterfly designs. African safari crib bedding lends itself to endless bedtime stories. Dolphins, adorable puppies and Noahs Ark will also be well-loved.

4. Anything On Wheels Will Appeal

Boys love fire truck crib bedding as a baby nursery idea. Be different and decorate with Harley Davidsons. Alternatively take to the sky with airplane decor. Another old favorite on wheels is a train theme. Kids love cars and anything that moves or make a noise. So indulge them in their room.

5. Naptime On A Nautical Note

Ship Ahoy! Tell tales of sea creatures and far-away, dreamy places with furnishings on a nautical note. From ships and sails to whale’s tales and other ocean critters will stimulate little imaginations. This is the stuff bedtime stories should be made of. Every night another place and a new animal.

6. Sporting A Lively Theme

Dads will probably opt for this one if they are involved in decorating for a boy. Every sport under the sun is now represented in cot accessories. Baseball fans can choose their favorite colors, while football and basketball enthusiasts have not been forgotten. Just don’t put too much pressure on the growing little person. Remember dad, this is his life – not your second chance…

7. Proudly Display Your Patchwork Creations

This baby nursery idea comes in every conceivable color and pattern. It often is a sensible choice, as the inevitable spills and mishaps won’t be as noticeable. Patchwork quilts often become heirlooms. Perhaps you can make your own quilt from fabrics scraps with a story attached to each one. That can make for some interesting bedtime tales. Plaids are also a good choice, if you don’t fancy patchwork.

8. A Star For Your Little Star

Watch your baby’s face lit up as he or she discovers the wonders of creation. Why not help in this process with the moon, stars, planets and spaceships on bedding and curtains. All sorts of wonderful accessories can be added to complement this theme. You may have to brush up on your own knowledge about the subject, but you will need to do that anyway when your child reaches school-going age. With an outer space crib set your bundle of joy will go on many an adventure.

9. Turn Back The Clock With A Vintage Theme

Perhaps your family has some heirlooms you would like to incorporate in your design. With the right furniture, an old-world look can be quite something. You can always introduce a touch of color and some modern elements to stimulate the baby’s senses. Try to use a variety of fabric textures for tactile stimulation when expanding on this baby nursery idea.

10. Teach To Care With Care Bears Bedding

These can be really adorable, with bright and cheery colors. Babies love these sets. A wide variety of accessories are also available, from bedtime bears to potty seats and keepsake pillow sets. You can also find delightful Care Bear lamps, area rugs, crib organizers and wall borders to go with the cot set and curtains.

Full sets usually include the fitted sheet, a quilt of some sort, pillow cases, crib bumper, dust ruffle, curtains and valance. Many manufacturers dream up all sorts of adorable, matching accessories to bring the room together. Wall hangings always help to create a warm effect.

So, get yourself a cup of tea, kick off your shoes, pull up the rocking chair and day-dream about all the magical hours you are going to spend here, discovering all the wonders of your baby nursery idea with your little one.

Cradle cap treatment is a remedy to be used mostly for babies and infants to treat cradle cap. The condition can be quite an ugly skin infection that can plague a newborn’s scalp. It usually doesn’t hurt them nor is it contagious. However, it can be quite unsightly and alarming to anybody who has never seen it before. The good news is that it is usually a temporary condition and most times will go away on its own.

An effective cradle cap treatment doesn’t have to be complicated. Nor should it be. I completely and totally believe in natural remedies. Especially when it is a baby that is being treated for a scalp disorder, natural is the best choice even more so. If you want to get rid of your baby’s scalp problem, I highly recommend only natural ingredients.

Because of the relatively harmless nature of this condition, cradle cap treatment should be kept at minimum. It should also consist of proper shampooing and gentle removal of the scales present on your baby’s scalp. A very safe pre-cursor leading up to a treatment is to switch over to an all natural and organic shampoo. Doing this will eliminate any harmful chemicals found in some products from irritating or harming your infant’s delicate skin.

While this condition mainly affects younger children, some older children struggle with it as well, while their mothers search frantically for the best treatment available. In the US, up to one fifth of all children of school age have cradle cap, along with about one in twelve of the young teenager population.

Here is a relatively safe cradle cap treatment you may want to employ. First, apply baby oil to the affected scalp areas ten to fifteen minutes before shampooing. This will help to loosen the scales and flakes, making them easier to remove.

You should only apply this cradle cap treatment ten to fifteen minutes before shampooing. Leaving the oil on for too long might result in a thick layer of build up that could clog pores and further irritate your baby’s skin. We definitely do not want them to feel any un-necessary pain or dis-comfort. When shampooing, you may want to use a soft bristled tooth brush to assist in removing any loose patches. Remember to be gentle and use your own parental insight. It can sometimes be better to under do it instead of over doing it.

If your baby isn’t responding well to the above cradle cap treatment, it may be time to visit the family doctor. In most cases this is not necessary. Though I am a parent myself and I understand what it is like to worry about your child. Especially when they are at that age when they can’t talk yet. It would be so much more assuring if they could just tell you how they are feeling. So if you think it would be better to error on the side of caution and take them to a medical professional, then do so. Better to be safe than sorry and mis-diagnose the condition.

If you are going to utilize a cradle cap treatment, it is very important to first identify that it is in fact cradle cap that you will be treating. Cradle cap usually appears as an oily, yellow scaling of the upper layer of skin and a hard crusting on the baby’s scalp. Commonly caused by a buildup of normal naturally secreted oils from the skin itself.

The condition generally affects the scalp, head, eyebrows, and areas behind the ears. Although it can be un-nerving and unsightly to observe, remember that it is a fairly normal, harmless and noncontagious condition. It can be treated with natural and gentle methods.

If it doesn’t appear to be bothering your baby, cradle cap usually doesn’t need to be treated. In most cases, it will go away on its own by age one. It can be itchy for the baby though. So it is really up to you what you want to do about it.

Although my site is more suited to teenagers and adults who suffer from dandruff and other skin disorders, I do have a book that can offer more information on choosing a cradle cap treatment To explore other cradle cap treatment options you should take a look.
